Job title:                     BAR & DUTY MANAGER

Reporting to:             General Manager

Line-managing:        Casual Bar Staff

Working hours:         37 hours per week – to include evening and weekend working

Rate of pay:               £20,000-£25,000 per annum (depending on experience)



Reporting to the General Manager, the areas of responsibility for the Bar and Duty Manager are:

·       Running the bar for events Alexander Centre

·       Setting up and opening and closing the bar

·       Maintaining the bar – weekly line cleaning, cleaning and restocking the bar

·       Cash management, including setting up floats and cashing up

·       Running activity and stock reports from the till system (EPOS)

·       Tracking margins and sourcing stock to maximise profit margins

·       Working within a budget and reporting against that budget

·       Doing the weekly stock-take and ordering stock as required

·       Recruiting, training and overseeing casual members of bar staff

·       Developing the bar and café offer

·       Generating ideas to increase bar revenue

·       Opening and closing the building as required – with sole responsibility for the venue at times

·       Doing the room set-ups for bookings and hires

·       Covering weekday evening and daytime shifts as required

·       Building management and operational duties, such as meter reads, fire alarm tests, maintenance reviews

·       Housekeeping duties to ensure the building is clean and well-presented for all users of the building

·       Admin support if necessary

The position will be 37 hours per week over 5 days and working hours will vary, but will include weekend and evening working, as the Bar & Duty Manager will be expected to work evenings and weekends regularly and cover the majority of Events at the Alexander Centre.

Objective of the role

The main objective of this role is to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the bar, and duty-management of events and activities at The Alexander Centre, ensuring the safety of our beautiful building and the safety and satisfaction of all the people who use it.


The person

This position is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience of managing a bar, to take over the running of The Alexander Centre’s events bar.  There is potential to grow this role in future to offer a more extensive food and beverage offer. Working within a very small team, you will need to be flexible and adaptable, willing to work hard and help grown the business.  You will need to have energy and drive, and excellent customer service skills.

Essential Experience

·       Bar management experience – to include cash handling, staff management and promotion of services.

·       Training and experience in and good working knowledge of beverage handling and storage.

·       Experience in cash handling and staff supervision.

·       Experience of EPOS till system or similar for stock control and management

·       The holding of a personal licence or the preparedness to undertake personal licence training.

Desirable Experience

·       Building operations and supervision

·       Good knowledge of Health and Safety

·       Experience of working in an events/hospitality venue
